Following the closure of Te Waka, Waikato’s regional economic development agency, on 30 June 2024, Waikato Regional Council has committed to re-establishing a coordinated regional approach to economic development.

Chair Pamela Storey acknowledged Te Waka’s contributions over the past six years and emphasised the importance of a strong, unified voice to advocate for the region’s unique needs.

Through the mayoral forum and collaboration with iwi, businesses, local and central government, and community organisations, the Council aims to drive job creation, infrastructure investment, educational improvement, and broader regional prosperity.

With the coalition government signalling a preference for working with well-organised regions, Waikato is focusing on building a shared vision that addresses its dynamic economic pressures and growth opportunities, ensuring long-term benefits for its communities.
