Waikato councils have announced a commitment to improve the way they use energy, as part of a three-year partnership with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).
The agreement was signed in Hamilton today by Gavin Ion, Board Chair of Local Authority Shared Services Ltd (LASS), and EECA Chief Executive, Mike Underhill. It puts in place steps to save energy and reduce carbon emissions by Waikato councils that should save ratepayers more than $400,000 per year.
Sally Davis, LASS Chief Executive, says the agreement involves reviewing current energy use across the councils and investigating opportunities for energy efficiency improvements and increasing the use of renewable energy.
“The partnership agreement with EECA will lead to increased engagement and interest amongst member councils, encouraging them to prioritise energy efficiency in the operation of their infrastructure, buildings and community assets,” Ms Davis says.
Mr Underhill says EECA welcomes the agreement as councils have an important leadership role to play in promoting good energy practices.
“It is encouraging to see local bodies leading by example when it comes to energy efficiency initiatives. As councils work with businesses and local communities they can influence a wider commitment to energy efficiency,” Mr Underhill says.
“EECA is happy to assist LASS in its focus on long-term energy savings and pleased that once these programmes have been implemented the result will see annual savings of more than $400,000 for Waikato ratepayers.”
The agreement will involve monitoring energy use and audits to identify actions to save energy, and the development of an energy management plan across the Waikato councils. It will also see the promotion of a certified NABERSNZ™ rating and the production of case studies to encourage others to undertake similar projects.
